THE CLIFF HOUSE
A singular bonsai tree stood at the edge of the cliff when the owner, a seasoned realtor, fell in love with this land. So he assembled a team he was confident could tackle the challenge of building with nature rather than against it. The dwelling's strategically placed rooflines and windows maximize viewpoints, while the line between man-made and natural elements is blurred by design.
Purpose-built for aging in place, this house is a forever home. The layout features main-level living with a primary bedroom and an open floor plan to increase accessibility, as well as a bonus ground-floor apartment to accommodate assisted living. To honor the owner's emphasis on wellness, we sourced custom finishes in natural materials such as pine, white oak, lava stone, quartzite, and hot-rolled steel, and used sustainable sealants. This home is immersed in nature, and the bonsai tree remains a focal point, visible from the living room window.
